    GROUP EXHIBITION “Βlue Water”

Art Historian Nikolena Kalaitzaki notes on the group exhibition of art titled “Blue Water”:
24 contemporary artists, renowned both in the greek and the universal art scene, find themselves in an original and productive discourse and present works inspired by the sea, the ocean views and the life within, in a journey that seems to rest upon blue waves, sea beds and newfound lands.

The sea, an integral element of the Greek landscape, has always been an endless source of inspiration for all those who gaze at it from the land, those who love it equally whether it’s calm or turbulent. How many daydreams have travelled away on its waves, how many views, poems and works of art has it given us through the ages?
Playthings, the waters/ In their shadowy flow/
Speak with their kisses about the dawn/
    That begins/ Horizoning —
And the pigeons in their cave/ Rustle their wings/
Blue awakening in the source/ Of day/ Sun —
    (Odysseus Elytis, AEGEAN II

With a surplus of imagination and inspiration, their brushes and paints on the run pulsating with creative freedom, the artists in this exhibition, each using their own individual artistic style, viewpoint and attitude, depict novel worlds and aquatic scenes that, though often based on actual landscapes, seem to materialize out of the allure of a dream world.

Thus emerges sometimes a tempting sea with abstract and expressionistic expanses and sometimes a sea realistically rendered -or identified by masterfully designed surrealistic doodles. After all, clear waters may be carved out expertly in every shade and every form and they are keen to all kinds of games.

The northwest wind bestows the sail
    To the sea/ The hair’s caress/
In the insouciance of its dream/
    Dew – cool —
Waves in the light/ Revive the eyes/
Where life sails towards/ The recognition/
    Life —
    (Odysseus Elytis, AEGEAN II [1]
